Capable of playing as a central defender or holding midfielder, Sam Hird joined the Spirietes ahead of the 2012/13 campaign from Doncaster Rovers.

His career began at Leeds United, initially as a striker before being converted into a defender, Hird would captain both the youth and reserve teams at Elland Road. He was loaned out to Doncaster in 2007 before joining them permanently following his release at the end of the 2006/07 season.

In November 2007, Hird spent two months on loan at Grimsby Town before returning to the Keepmoat to establish himself in the Rovers XI as they went on to beat Leeds in the League One Playoff final and gained promotion to the Championship.

After making 157 appearances for Doncaster, he signed for Chesterfield where he was immediately given the captain’s armband. He was instrumental in the Spireites League Two Championship campaign in 2013/14, scoring the first goal in the 2-1 victory over Fleetwood Town that secured the title.

Hird was named Chesterfield’s player of the year for the 2015/16 season and made his 200th appearance for the club against Port Vale on April 8. Hird has scored 11 goals for the Spireites and continues to be a fans favourite.
