Chesterfield fell to a dramatic 4-3 defeat against Harrogate Town at the Proact on Tuesday night after a stoppage time winner from Jack Muldoon.
Nathan Tyson was the only change to the Spireites line-up after his game-winning hat-trick against Ebbsfleet, Mike Fondop dropped to the bench.
The visitors took the lead nine minutes in, Wayne Burrell was released down the left before his clipped cross into the box was met by Jon Stead who headed past Shwan Jalal.
Chesterfield nearly replied minutes later, David Buchanan’s free-kick found Will Evans whose header was acrobatically tipped over by Harrogate’s James Belshaw.
The Spireites, despite being behind, were looking the better side and came close to an equaliser through Jonathan Smith who found space on the edge of the area before his left-footed strike was well stopped by Belshaw.
Chesterfield got the equaliser they fully deserved in the 26th minute. Jordan Cropper raced down the right, reaching the by-line before delivering a pinpoint driven cross for Tom Denton who tapped home from close range.
Two minutes later, the Spireites went in front. Tyson’s attempted overhead volley fell at Liam Mandeville’s feet inside the penalty area. Mandeville kept his cool and prodded the ball past a helpless Belshaw.
However, Chesterfield’s lead was short-lived when Harrogate equalised in the 34th minute. Jack Diamond’s initial shot was well stopped by Jalal’s outstretched boot, but George Thomson finished the rebound.
Cropper then stopped a certain goal after Burrell’s header from a corner beat Jalal and was heading in but for the right-back's goal-line clearance.
Harrogate went close just after the break from a corner which was well met by Will Smith, but his header flew just over.
The visitors thought they had regained the lead when Jack Diamond latched onto a loose ball outside the box and struck his shot under Jalal into the back of the net, but the officials disallowed the goal due to a foul in the build-up.
Only a few minutes later, Diamond then turned provider for Stead’s second in the 61st minute. His cross was met by the forward who jumped highest and glanced his effort over Jalal (60).
Tyson threatened an equaliser when he got on the end of Evans’ knockdown from a corner, but the striker’s spinning shot was fired wide.
The Spireites pulled level in the 82nd minute, brilliant work from debutant substitute Regan Hutchinson allowed the youngster to deliver a deep cross for Denton who headed down to another substitute Scott Boden who squeezed his shot in at the near post.
Diamond thought he had taken all three points from the Spireites late on after weaving through a couple of Chesterfield defenders and firing a powerful strike goal-bound but Jalal did brilliantly low down to stop the shot.
Harrogate took all three points in stoppage time through Jack Muldoon after Diamond once again carried the ball well before a low cross was tapped in by Muldoon (90+2).
