After Saturday’s victory at Eastleigh, caretaker manager John Pemberton praised his side’s effort in what was a battling display.
“It was tough, which is what we expected,” he said to the press.
“I said in the press conference this week, they’re a big and physical side.
“It was a difficult pitch to play on and we knew it was going to be a battle.
“I thought in the first 20 minutes it took a bit of time to get going but I thought after that we actually were the better team.
“Second half we started off alright, Dents scored a good goal and then we got pinned back.
“To be fair to Eastleigh they put us under a lot of pressure, they played a lot of balls in the box where we had to defend for our lives.
“Then obviously Smudge scores another great goal which gives us that little bit of a platform but I was desperate for a clean sheet again.
“I can’t fault the effort and I’m really pleased to get another win.”
Right-back Jordan Cropper made his Chesterfield debut at Eastleigh after arriving on loan from Premier League side Burnley.
The caretaker manager was very positive when asked about the 20-year-old’s display, by saying: “I thought for his debut he did really well.
“He put some great crosses in.
“When you put young players in you always wonder how they are going to respond and he responded really well.
“You can see what his strengths are.
“He doesn’t get flustered and he’s got a good temperament.
Shwan Jalal produced a top goalkeeping display on Saturday, making a number of crucial saves and Pemberton explained how pleased he was with the number 1’s showing.
“He’s been magnificent the last two games and long may it continue,” stated Pemberton.
“He made the saves when he needed to and he took the pressure off when he had to.
“You can’t ask for anymore, two great performances.”
