Chesterfield secured a 2-0 away win at Eastleigh on Saturday thanks to goals from Tom Denton and Jonathan Smith in the second half.
John Pemberton made three changes from the Sutton United victory with Jamie Sharman and Denton coming into the starting XI. Jordan Cropper made his first start for the Spireites after joining on loan from Burnley.
The hosts were first to make the opposition keeper work. Michael Green struck a low free-kick from just outside the penalty area but his effort took a deflection off the wall which allowed Shwan Jalal to gather comfortably.
Chesterfield stopper Jalal was called upon again just a couple of minutes later when Eastleigh captain Danny Hollands met a cross from the far side. Hollands powered his header towards the near post, however, Jalal was quickly across to make the save.
Eastleigh continued to have the early chances as James Alabi was next to threaten the Spireites’ goal. The striker turned well on the edge of the box and bent a right-footed effort towards the far corner but fortunately for Chesterfield, it dropped inches wide.
The Spireites found themselves limited to half chances in the first twenty minutes. Denton almost got on the end of a looping Buchanan delivery but Max Stryjek was alert and punched the ball away from danger.
Debutant Cropper looked bright on the right-hand side and delivered a fantastic cross which almost found Boden’s run to the near post but was unlucky to see it skid just in front of the forward.
Denton was presented an opportunity when Udoka Godwin-Malife slipped in the box as he attempted to clear a cross from the far side. The ball fell for Denton but the Eastleigh defender recovered to put the striker off his effort.
Chesterfield finished the first half the stronger of the two teams with Boden having their best chance of the game so far in the 45th minute. Sharman poked the ball over the top and the striker met it on the volley but Stryjek was equal to it, which meant the teams went in at the break with the game goalless.
The away side began the second half like they finished the first with Buchanan’s cross from the far side dropping to Weston on the edge of the box. Unfortunately for the Spireites, the midfielder poked his strike straight at the Eastleigh goalkeeper.
Boden continued to cause the hosts’ defence problems with his pace and was put through one on one with Stryjek after a ball over the Eastleigh defence found his run into the box. Stryjek denied the striker once again though, standing strong to block his shot.
The Spireites’ pressure eventually paid off in the 54th minute when Denton opened the scoring. Boden delivered the perfect cross from the left-hand side and Denton was there to meet it and guide his header into the bottom right corner.
Eastleigh almost equalised immediately as Alabi was found in the box with a clever reverse pass. The striker struck his shot well but Jalal made a smart stop to his left to deny him.
The Spireites stopper was on hand to make another super save from Alabi as he saved the forward’s effort from close range.
Smith received the ball off a Denton flick on and made his way to the edge of the box, he struck his effort well but Styjeck was right behind it.
Jalal was needed twice in quick succession with around fifteen minutes to go, tipping a Tyrone Barnett header over the crossbar and making a great save to his left to deny Hollands.
It was the home side’s goalkeeper who was next to be tested. Cropper broke down the right, played the ball across to Smith but Stryjek was alert to save with his feet.
From the resulting corner, the Spireites doubled their lead against the run of play. The corner was played short and the ball was passed across to Smith just outside the Eastleigh penalty area. The midfielder then rifled the ball into the top corner (80).
Substitute Jake Scrimshaw hooked wide when he went through on goal late on and Jalal saved at his near post from a Hollands header to round off an incredible goalkeeping display.
Eastleigh continued to force the issue as the match went into stoppage time but the Spireites held on to claim back-to-back victories.
