Club officials have condemned a racist social media post aimed at a Mansfield Town player, purporting to be from a Chesterfield supporter.

Following the wholly unacceptable message sent via Twitter to Mal Benning, who is British-Asian, police have said they are investigating the matter.

An appeal has been made for help in identifying the person responsible, whose Twitter handle is '@SheridanOut' and claims to be called ‘Rhys’.

Anyone with any relevant information relating to this matter should email fans@chesterfield-fc.co.uk in confidence.

A club spokesman said: "Racist comments simply cannot be tolerated and any information we receive which helps police identify the person who has sent this message would be greatly appreciated.

"Chesterfield FC Community Trust does much to educate groups about diversity, race and equality, delivering workshops in Chesterfield and north Derbyshire.

"The club and the Trust also work in partnership with Kick It Out to promote inclusion and respect in football."
