Jonathan Smith’s goal early in the second gave the Spireites a 1-0 victory at home to Sutton United to make it a winning start for John Pemberton in his second spell as caretaker-manager.
Pemberton made three changes to the starting line-up, recalling Smith, Sam Wedgbury and Robbie Weir.
Mike Fondop put a first-minute header wide after meeting a cross from David Buchanan.
Another Buchanan cross almost found Scott Boden with the opposition defence managing to get the ball clear.
Omar Bugiel’s shot on the turn was on target but it lacked the power to test Shwan Jalal.
Tommy Wright got on the end of a long ball but his shot from inside the area hit the side netting.
Wright then made a strong run into the area before putting his shot wide.
Fondop had a good chance in the 15th minute, chipping over the bar after finding himself one-on-one with keeper Nik Tzanev.
Wright again posed a threat on the edge of the area, forcing Weir to make a good block.
Former Spireite Kyel Reid picked out Harry Beautyman’s run into the area with Weir again alert to the danger, putting the ball out for a corner.
Wedgbury conceded a free-kick, receiving a yellow card in the process, shortly before the half-hour mark. The resulting free-kick, taken by Beautyman, was comfortably saved by Jalal.
Liam Mandeville tried a shot from distance which cleared the bar.
Jalal did well to get a hand to a dangerous free-kick from Beautyman, touched the ball to safety.
Curtis Weston was brought down just outside the area and Liam Mandeville fired in the resulting free-kick, forcing a save from Tzanev.
Smith struck in the 50th minute with a fine finish, curling the ball into the top right-hand corner of the net after getting on the end of Fondop’s low cross.
Pemberton made an enforced change just after the hour-mark when Mandeville limped off and was replaced by Jamie Sharman.
There was a second change a few minutes later when Tom Denton came on in place of Weir.
When Fondop threatened to break clear on the left-hand side, he was wrestled to the ground by Ben Goodliffe, who was booked.
The Spireites had a let-off when Reid’s effort was deflected into the side netting.
There was another scare when the ball went into the net following a goalmouth scramble but Sutton’s celebrations were quickly cut short when the referee ruled that Wright had handled.
Jalal made a superb save in the 83rd minute, diving at full stretch t to turn Beautyman’s header wide of his right-hand post.
Substitute Craig Dundas wasted a great chance for Sutton late on, lifting the ball over from a good position.
After the full-time whistle, Fondop and Eastmond both received red cards following a clash.
Spireites: Jalal, Weir (Denton 65), Buchanan, Evans, Hollis, Smith, Weston, Mandeville (Sharman 61), Wedgbury, Fondop, Boden (McKay 82)
