Curtis Weston’s dramatic last minute winner gave the Spireites a crucial three points after a 3-2 victory over Wrexham at the Proact Stadium.
John Pemberton made two changes to the side that lost 3-0 at Notts County. Both Mike Fondop and Nathan Tyson returned to the squad for Scott Boden and Sam Wedgbury.
Prior to the match, both sets of fans joined in with the minute's applause to remember former Chesterfield player Jordan Sinnott.
The game was 16 minutes young by the time the first attempt at goal arrived. Luke Summerfield's driven effort from outside the box zipped just wide of the post.
Just five minutes later, the away side took the lead. JJ Hooper’s free-kick was headed over Shwan Jalal by the unfortunate Will Evans.
The equaliser arrived not long after. Curtis Weston headed the ball through to Tom Denton who fired the ball past Rob Lainton. In his celebration, Denton paid tribute to former teammate Sinnott (25).
Rob Lainton made a smart double save soon after to keep it level going into half time. Firstly Tyson’s snapshot was well saved at the near post before Lainton then held Denton’s header from the resulting corner.
The first attempt of the second half fell to Jay Harris. The midfielder let fly from distance but his shot went high and wide.
However, Wrexham did take the lead in the 68th minute. Hooper flicked on Lainton's clearance to Jordan Ponticelli, who poked home past Jalal.
It didn’t take long for the Spireites to respond again. In the 71st minute, substitute Liam Mandeville was on hand to tap home from David Buchanan’s corner.
With just over ten minutes to go, Hooper almost headed the visitors back in front but his faint effort whistled wide of the post.
Will Evans thought he might have won it with minutes left in the game. His header from Buchanan’s corner was cleared off the line.
However, with time just about up, the Spireites won it at the death. Weston’s close-range effort crept over the line via the crossbar to blow the roof of the Proact Stadium (90+4).
