Chesterfield fell to a 3-0 defeat away at local rivals Notts County. Three second half strikes gave the hosts all three points in a game which saw Scott Boden miss a penalty in the first half.
John Pemberton named an unchanged side from last weekend’s 1-1 draw against AFC Fylde.
Notts County had the first sight of goal inside five minutes with Cal Roberts who carried the ball well through the middle before hitting his shot wide.
Enzo Boldewijn then delivered a teasing cross into the Chesterfield box finding Connell Rawlinson whose downward header struck the post.
Boldewijn was back in the action when the winger took responsibility of a free-kick just outside the penalty area. His curling effort clipped Shwan Jalal’s crossbar and went behind.
Chesterfield’s first look at goal came from a Jordan Cropper cross which was headed over by Boden who couldn’t guide his effort goalwards.
Neither side were really controlling the game despite the hosts creating the clearer opportunities, but Cropper’s long throws were causing the County defence problems.
The Spireites were awarded a penalty five minutes before the break thanks to a long upfield ball which Boden flicked onto David Buchanan before the Chesterfield full-back was pulled down by Richard Brindley. Boden stepped up but couldn’t beat Ross Fitzsimons who guessed the right way to keep out the spot-kick.
Haydn Hollis smashed the bar just before half-time after a scramble in the County box, but Hollis’ effort wouldn’t have counted anyway as referee James Ball called for a foul on a County defender. The sides went in at the break goalless.
County opened the scoring in the 52nd minute, Boldewijn was given too much space to carry the ball forward before smashing his shot into the top corner from outside the box leaving Jalal no chance.
Chesterfield nearly pulled level with a sensational effort from Thomas Denton who met Boden’s cushioned chest down and struck a sweet right-footed volley which cannoned off the crossbar.
Kyle Wootton doubled the hosts’ lead seven minutes after the opener, Roberts’ inch-perfect cross was met by Wootton’s diving header which flashed past Jalal.
Chesterfield began getting more of the ball up the field and nearly pulled a goal back when Buchanan charged forward before firing a stunning left-footed effort which was acrobatically stopped by Fitzsimons.
County scored a third in the 76th minute when Jalal couldn’t keep hold of Boldewijn’s effort which allowed Wootton to tap in his second of the game.
Looking for a way back into the game, Josef Yarney delivered a deep cross which was met by Denton, but his header was well held by Fitzsimons.
