The Spireites secured a third consecutive league victory with a hard-fought 1-0 win against local rivals Notts County, thanks to Gevaro’s first goal for the club in the first half.
John Sheridan made four changes following Tuesday night’s FA Cup exit at Wrexham. Shwan Jalal returned in goal and captain Will Evans, Curtis Weston and Tom Denton also came back in.
The early encounters were tightly contested. Sean Shields nearly created an opening for County inside ten minutes when his corner was met by Kyle Wootton whose header was bravely blocked by Denton.
Wootton came close again for the visitors, this time his sharp turn allowed him some space to cut inside and curl a right-footed shot just past Jalal’s far post.
Kristian Dennis then found himself through after a Wootton flick, but his low-strike from inside the box was well saved by Jalal.
It was the Spireites who scored 27 minutes in when Scott Boden picked up the ball on the edge of the box before clipping an inch perfect cross to the far post, finding Gevaro whose measured volley fired into the net.
Gevaro and Boden linked up again just before the break when Gevaro carried the ball out from his own half before laying off Boden but his shot was off target. The Spireites took a 1-0 lead into the second half.
County were awarded a free kick five minutes after the restart but Richard Brindley’s effort from 25 yards out sailed over.
Chesterfield thought they’d doubled their lead just after the hour-mark when Jay Sheridan’s cross found Will Evans at the far post who powered his header past Sam Slocombe but Evans was deemed to be offside.
County quickly attacked back as they carried the ball out of defence before a Brindley shot was headed away for a corner by Weston.
From the resulting set-piece, Wootton climbed highest at the far post to direct a header goalwards, but Jalal claimed the ball well.
Brindley yet again had a chance to strike when he cut inside on his left foot before releasing a dangerous effort which Jalal stopped impressively.
County substitute Regan Booty whipped a corner in stoppage time which Mitch Rose connected with, but his header went wide. The Spireites stood strong to secure all three points.
