Following the Spireites battling 1-0 victory against local rivals Notts County, John Sheridan commended his side for their tireless work ethic as Chesterfield recorded their third consecutive league victory.
Sheridan said: “When I look at who we were playing and how they’re going in the league it’s good to get a positive result against a really good team who I think will definitely be up there at the end of the season," he said.
“I think we looked solid, they had a lot of possession, but we knew that. They moved us around a lot, but I don’t think they created too many opportunities against us.
“We got a great goal and it gives us that lifeline, if you keep a clean sheet you win the game. It’s a massive performance from us.
“I’m chuffed to bits with the players. They’ve shown today that we can compete with one of the favourites for promotion.”
The Spireites boss, although pleased with the win, assured that Chesterfield still must keep pushing themselves in this league.
“I don’t’ think we’ve turned a corner, I just think we need to get on a consistent run and consistency in our game, that’s what we’re showing," explained Sheridan.
“A lot of the games we’ve lost this year, we just haven’t turned up and conceded really sloppy goals. We can see a big difference in the way we defended today.
“We can see how we’re trying to defend with a bit of urgency to stop goals going in. We’ve got to believe we can be at the top of the table, I don’t want us looking down.
“We’ve got to stay focused and keep improving which we are slowly doing. If we can carry on winning you just don’t know where you’re going to be.”
Sheridan also touched upon how pleased he was with his side’s defensive performance in a system that he feels has benefited the Spireites, by stating: “I want the players to feel comfortable in how we’re playing and I’m trying to keep the same system.
"I just want people slotting in when people get injured or suspended.
“I have good players who are not in the team who will be needed. I’m pleased for the back four and the keeper, I always felt we scored goals and we’ve proved that.
“You only need one, if you keep cleansheets you win games. I think we defended really well today, as a team, we worked hard from the front and it’s always a massive bonus to keep a clean sheet. The most important thing is getting three points.”
