After a remarkable journey last season it was always going to be a tough task for Noon and his side to reenact the women’s fortunes from last year.
With Bedworth Ladies FC coming to town it wasn’t going to be easy with them currently competing in the Women’s National League, two divisions higher than Chesterfield.
The game started and already Bedworth showed their force with their fast and skilful wingers causing problems on multiple occasions only for Nic Watson to keep the scoreline level.
On 7 minutes in Bedworth took the lead, the speedy winger pounced on a defensive error and calmly slotted the ball low into the Chesterfield goal.
The Spireites didn’t look disheartened and immediately after the restart, Gemma Nuttall played a brilliantly timed ball to Gina Camfield whose shot was well saved from close range.
From then on it was all Chesterfield, Izzy Lonsdale picked the ball up on the edge of the area but her shot was easily saved by the keeper.
Just when the Spireites looked like they were showing their intent to level things up, an unmarked header by the Bedworth centre half from a corner looped into the roof of the net, putting them 2-0 to the good.
Again the Spireites fought back, Nat Frogatt rose above everyone from Beth Smyth’s corner but her header was cleared off the line. Sammy Stokes then went close when she went through one on one but the finish just went wide.
That’s how the half ended, Chesterfield FC Women 0 - 2 Bedworth United Ladies FC
Immediately from the restart Chesterfield pulled one back, with Kelly Fiddler dancing her way through on the edge of the area and laying the ball off to Izzy Lonsdale who smashed her shot into the far left corner making it a one-goal deficit.
The next 20 minutes became an onslaught of attacks with Chesterfield throwing everything at the Bedworth defence to try and find an opening.
The Spireites were forced into an early sub when Nat Frogatt had to leave the field injured, she was replaced by 16-year-old Courtney Caunt who came on to replace her, making her debut.
Gina Camfield so nearly levelled things up for the Spireites when the ball fell to her in the area, she took it around the keeper but the angle was just too tight and her shot rifled against the side netting.
With 15 to go Paige Singleton and Leoni Everley, we’re introduced to the game in place for Steph Warren and Carlie Green which saw a change in shape as the Spireites threw everything forward in hope of an equaliser.
Following the substitutions, it left Chesterfield open at the back and Bedworth capitalised, a counter which left the Spireites gaping was pounced upon and the tie was put to bed.
That’s how the game finished with the Spireites being defeated by 3 goals to one, the goal coming courtesy of Izzy Lonsdale’s well-taken strike early in the second half.
A tough one to take for the Spireites as they fought hard against a team two divisions above them and looked the better team for large spells but it just wasn’t to be.
