The Spireites went down to a 5-1 defeat at home to Hartlepool United on Tuesday night.
John Sheridan made six changes for the second consecutive game meaning Luke Coddington, Joe Rowley, Sam Wedgbury, Jonathan Smith, Tom Denton and Scott Boden all came into the starting line-up.
Chesterfield kept possession well in the early stages, but it was the visitors who had the first glimpse of goal. Gime Toure weaved his way into space before his deflected shot was caught well by a back tracking Coddington.
Hartlepool’s dangerman Luke James came close moments later. A long ball in behind found James whose chipped shot flew over the bar.
The away side were on top and nearly took the lead in spectacular fashion with Josh Hawkes’ 25-yard strike which Coddington did brilliantly to push aside.
Coddington was called upon again, this time Toure worked a cross in from the wing finding Guy Mafuta but his strike was well saved by the Spireites keeper at full stretch.
Mafuta found the opener 23 minutes in - this time a cross from James found Mafuta whose first-time effort fired into the back of the net.
Hartlepool doubled their lead four minutes later. James turned goalscorer when he was played through on goal before slotting his shot across Coddington into the far corner.
Boden came close for the Spireites, the striker creating space for himself on the edge of the box before curling his shot just wide of the post.
Rowley looked to inspire Chesterfield back into the game when he carried the ball from the right in-field, beating his man but eventually floating his shot off target.
The Spireites pulled one back with the last bit of action before the break. Jay Sheridan’s initial corner was stabbed away before Sheridan’s second cross found Denton at the far post whose downwards header was inadvertently headed in by Hartlepool’s Peter Kioso.
Hartlepool struck three minutes into the second half however when a long ball found Toure on the right who darted inside and smashed a left-footed shot into the roof of the net.
Wedgbury came close after latching onto an attempted clearance when his long-range effort skipped just wide.
Mafuta extended the visitors' lead in the 56th minute. Toure’s cross found Mafuta who tapped home into an empty net to double his tally on the night.
Toure got his second of the game in the 68th minute to stretch Hartlepool’s advantage. James once again created an opening down the left before his cross allowed Toure to direct his shot past Coddington.
The Spireites remained threatening going forward and substitute Liam Mandeville linked up with Shaw before the teenager’s shot was fired narrowly wide.
