The youth team secured a 2-1 victory over Northern Premier League Division One side Ilkeston Town in a friendly on Saturday.
After being a goal down within the first 25 minutes the young Spireites responded strongly and got themselves back in the game courtesy of a 25-yard pile driver from Ben Garwood.
Neil Cluxton’s team turned the game on its head when brilliant wing play from Kade Hargreaves gave Sam Jeeves the chance to finish from close range.
The youngsters comfortably held out for the rest of the game as they head into a busy week of league fixtures.
Development players Alex Render and Jamie Sharman were both involved after the latter returned from his loan spell at Kidderminster Harriers to recover from an injury.
Academy coach Cluxton spoke highly of his side after an impressive display against a strong Ilkeston line-up, by saying: “I’m very pleased and it was a really good game.
“The response was brilliant after going a goal down.
“The lads worked hard.
“We equalised with a great strike from Ben Garwood and then we deservedly took the lead in the second half.
“We were comfortable after that.”
The U18s have a busy schedule this week with two league games in four days, they have home games against Lincoln City on Tuesday and Rotherham United on Friday, both 11am kick-offs.
Cluxton stated that Saturday’s friendly victory will give the youth team some momentum as they head into a hectic week of fixtures.
“It sets us up nicely for a busy week,” explained the youth coach.
“Two home games with Lincoln on Tuesday and Rotherham on Friday.
“We are targeting six points if possible and we’ll see where we are after that.”
