A youthful Chesterfield side exited the Derbyshire Senior Cup at the hands of Glossop North End on Wednesday night.
The Spireites were handed a good opportunity to open the scoring when Jack McKay managed to intercept a back pass six minutes in. The forward tried to find strike partner Luke Rawson only a few yards out with a flick but Glossop got back well to clear before the pass reached him.
Bakari Coulibaly looked threatening down the wing from left-back a delivered a perfect low cross to the back post, however, no Glossop player was there to take advantage.
McKay was the main source of attack for the visitors once again as he slid to get on the end of a Charlie Wakefield cross from the left-hand side. The striker did well to get to it but couldn’t get enough contact on his shot which allowed the keeper to make a save from close range.
The hosts took the lead in the 21st minute after Braulio Maeico put Mohammed Sheriff one on one with Dylan Wharton. The Glossop forward kept his composure to slot his effort under the Spireites stopper.
Chesterfield almost equalised just two minutes later, but Rawson volleyed over from just a few yards out after a good delivery from Chad Gibson.
Regan Hutchinson was a bright spark on the right-hand side and with half an hour gone the winger used his pace to burst past his marker. He made his way into the penalty area but couldn’t find a fellow Spireite with his cut back.
Glossop had two half-chances as the first half drew to a close. Lee Wilshaw put a header narrowly wide before the lively Sheriff dragged a right-footed effort wide and it ended 1-0 to the home side at half time.
The first opportunity of the second half fell to McKay after Rawson cushioned the ball down to him only a few yards from goal. The Scot stooped to head towards goal but found his effort blocked by a lunging Glossop defender.
McKay manufactured a chance of his own as he danced past two defenders and dribbled into the Glossop penalty area. The forward poked an effort past the keeper but was unlucky to see it cleared off the line.
The Chesterfield striker’s third chance of the second half was the best of the game. Liam Mandeville slid a clever pass to find Alex Render’s run down the right, the right-back played the ball across goal but McKay leant back and fired over from only a couple of yards out.
Glossop doubled their advantage against the run of play with ten minutes to go. Wilshaw’s strike from the right was saved well by Wharton but Porya Ahmadi was alert in the box and converted from the rebound (80).
Coulibaly had the final chance of the game as he showed his speed down the left once again but blazed his strike narrowly over Wharton’s crossbar.
