Chesterfield secured back-to-back victories with a comfortable 3-0 victory against Sutton United at the Proact on Saturday. Tom Denton set up goals for Jonathan Smith and Scott Boden before turning goalscorer to add a third.
John Sheridan made three changes to the team that beat Havant & Waterlooville 2-1 last weekend with Charlie Carter, Smith and Laurence Maguire all comng into the starting line-up.
The visitors had the first sight of goal when a corner found its way to James Dobson on the edge of the area and he weaved into some space before firing a shot just over the bar.
Chesterfield created their first real chance midway through the first half when Joe Rowley slid a tidy through-ball into the path of Boden who struck a low, driven shot which was saved well by Ross Worner.
Sutton then went close through Dylan Kearney who found space on the edge of the Spireites’ box and curled his right-footed shot just wide of Shwan Jalal’s goal.
The Spireites found the breakthrough in the 28th minute. Boden’s neat footwork allowed him to find Rowley out-wide and he delivered a dangerous ball into the area. The cross was met by Denton whose downward header found Smith at the far post to head into an empty net from close range.
Chesterfield went in at the break 1-0 up courtesy of Smith’s header on his first game back since the birth of his second daughter.
Shortly after the break, the Spireites doubled their lead. A long Jalal goal kick was flicked on well by Denton for Boden to latch on to. Boden looked to have ran the ball too far but managed to squeeze his shot across goal into the far corner of the net with a brilliant finish in the 47th minute.
After two assists, Denton got on the scoresheet himself. This time Chapman’s reverse pass baffled the Sutton defence and found Maguire, who cut back on his left foot and floated a brilliant ball for Denton to head home to make it 3-0 in the 56th minute.
Sutton searched for a way back into the game and Dobson curled a cross into the six-yard box which Brett Williams failed to get on the end of and allowed Jalal to claim the ball safely.
The Spireites’ stunning second-half performance continued and Rowley went close to stretching the lead when his powerful run through the midfield gave the 19-year-old space to hit a right-footed shot which narrowly missed the target.
Chesterfield kept on top and nearly scored another when Chapman’s corner wasn’t dealt with by Worner in the Sutton goal. Worner’s failure to catch resulted in a goal-mouth scramble and Haydn Hollis nearly tapped home but Sutton eventually cleared the danger.
Rowley came close again with ten minutes to go. A long Will Evans ball found Chapman whose smart piece of skill set up Rowley who struck a curling shot which brushed just over the bar.
Chesterfield played the game out comfortably and took all three points with a dominant 3-0 performance.
