A Will Evans header and a stoppage-time penalty from Scott Boden completed a Spireites comeback at Havant and Waterlooville on Saturday.
John Sheridan made four changes to the side that drew at Bromley on Tuesday night, with Bradley Barry, Ellis Chapman, Robbie Weir and Tom Denton coming into the starting line-up.
Boden had two fantastic opportunities to open the scoring within the first ten minutes. Chapman found the Chesterfield forward with a cross from the left-hand side but he could only find the hands of Ben Dudzinski with a header.
Boden’s second opportunity came from another Chapman cross but the striker couldn’t adjust his feet when a powerful low cross came in, and the ball rolled agonisingly wide of the left post.
It was the home side that took the lead in the 12th minute. The wind took hold of a Chris Paul corner from the right-hand side, it looped over the outstretched arms of Shwan Jalal and into the far corner.
The visitors looked to respond and with half an hour gone Denton had an opportunity to level the scores. Josef Yarney curled a cross in from the right which found Denton, but the tall striker could only put his header wide.
The Spireites striker saw another header go narrowly wide when Barry found him with a chipped cross to the back post in stoppage time at the end of the first half. Dudzinski was happy to watch it drop wide of his left post and the home side went into the break with a goal advantage.
Boden was first to have a shot at goal after the interval. He made some space for himself on the left side of the box, but Dudzinski got down well to keep it out.
With 52 minutes on the clock, the visitors got back into the game. Chapman delivered a free kick into the area from the right, and Evans rose above the Havant and Waterlooville defenders to head into the top left corner.
The home side nearly got back in front almost immediately. Jalal had to pull off a brilliant double save to keep out Alfie Rutherford’s header from close-range and the strikers follow up effort.
It was the home side’s goalkeeper Dudzinski who was called into action next. Boden smashed his long-range effort towards the top right corner but the Havant stopper dove acrobatically to his left to push it wide.
The game looked to be winding down as it entered stoppage time. However, substitute Jerome Binnom-Williams managed to get his body in front of his marker and was brought down in the penalty area. Boden stepped up and smashed his penalty into the left corner to give the Spireites the victory (90+2).
