Chesterfield ran out 3-1 winners at Braintree on Tuesday night, thanks to a brace from Scott Boden and a Charlie Carter strike. Luke Allen’s penalty brought the home side back into the game, but Boden’s second put the game beyond doubt.
John Sheridan made two changes from Saturday’s loss at Wrexham, with Carter and Tom Denton coming into the starting eleven.
The home side created the first opportunity of the game when Callum Morton managed to turn and shoot from the left-hand side of the box. The Braintree man aimed his effort at Shwan Jalal’s near post, but the Chesterfield stopper got down smartly to make the save.
The Spireites manufactured a chance of their own just after the ten-minute mark. Ellis Chapman delivered a tempting cross towards Denton from the left, but the Chesterfield striker wasn’t able to steer his header on target.
Chesterfield were given an early scare just a few minutes later as a loose ball fell to Iffy Allen outside the area. Allen struck his dipping half-volley well, but luckily for the Spireites, it came back off the crossbar.
The visitors took the lead in the 15th minute, when a Josef Yarney cross was met by Denton. The tall forward headed down to strike partner Scott Boden who found the back of the net.
Just under ten minutes after getting themselves in front, the away side extended their lead. Carter received the ball around 25 yards from goal, the attacker moved the ball onto his right foot and curled it into the bottom right corner (24).
Braintree attempted to get themselves back into the game as a free kick was floated to the back post. Rob Atkinson headed the free-kick back across goal, but Kodi Lyons-Foster slashed his first time shot wide of Jalal’s left post.
The beginning of the second half was one of very few chances for both sides, but Braintree were given the opportunity to get back into the game in the 65th minute. Korrey Henry was brought down inside the box and Allen stepped up to take the penalty. Allen slotted it past Jalal and into the left corner.
The home side nearly claimed an equaliser as the ball looped over Atkinson’s shoulder. He spun and volleyed towards goal, but saw his effort drop wide of the right post.
After soaking up some Braintree pressure, the Spireites put the game beyond doubt. A long kick by goalkeeper Jalal was flicked on by the head of Boden and it looped over the Braintree keeper for his second of the night (83).
The away side had two good chances in stoppage time, but Jerome Binnom-Williams’ header was well saved and Denton was unlucky to see his shot blocked on the line just a few moments later.
