The Spireites were beaten 2-1 by Rotherham United in their opening home pre-season friendly. All three goals came in the space of seven minutes in the first half with Will Evans scoring Chesterfield’s goal.
John Sheridan named a strong side with David Buchanan, Liam Mandeville and Anthony Gerrard all making their first appearances at the Proact in a Chesterfield shirt. Former loanee Haydn Hollis was also included after making a permanent switch to the club in May.
Fellow summer recruits Luke Coddington and Jay Sheridan were among the substitutes, alongside Josef Yarney and Jack McKay, who were signed on a permanent basis following spells on loan last season.
David Buchanan delivered a great ball in from the left but the ball just evaded Joe Rowley, who was running in.
Rotherham’s first chance fell to Carlton Morris, who pulled his low shot wide.
Shwan Jalal came to Chesterfield’s rescue, making a good save to keep out Freddie Ladapo’s shot from inside the area.
Ladapo then put a shot wide after receiving the ball on the left.
Jalal was called into action again, making a comfortable save from Dan Barlaser’s effort.
Rotherham took a 26thminute lead when Barlaser’s cross from the left may have touched Gerrard before the ball went into the net.
The Spireites equalised just three minutes later when Joe Rowley’s shot was parried by Lewis Price into the path of Evans who hammered the ball into the net.
Mandeville threatened shortly afterwards when Rowley slipped the ball to him through the middle, but his touch was a little heavy, allowing Price to claim.
Rotherham regained the lead when Evans fouled Morris and Michael Smith (33) converted the resulting penalty.
The Spireites line-up at the start of the second half showed three changes. Coddington took over in goal while Robbie Weir and Yarney replaced Curtis Weston and Jonathan Smith respectively.
Rowley headed off-target from Buchanan’s cross and Gerrard put a rising effort just over from the edge of the area.
McKay was sent on as a replacement for Rowley just after the hour-mark.
Rotherham had a good chance when Ladapo fired over after finding himself in space on the right-hand side of the area.
McKay went desperately close to levelling in the 69thminute after being through on the left-hand side of the area by Weir, Price getting a touch to his low shot and the ball coming back off the foot of the keeper’s left-hand post.
Five substitutions were made in the 74thminute with Sheridan, Jamie Sharman, Sam Wedgbury, Charlie Wakefield and Lee Shaw joining the action. They replaced Gerrard, Maguire, Buchanan, Mandeville and Boden.
Coddington saved a couple of efforts from Kyle Vassell in the last ten minutes of the match.
