Rob Coleman, the club’s strength and conditioning coach, has had a busy week making sure the players are in prime condition as our first pre-season friendly edges closer.
Coleman spoke to Spireites Digital after Friday’s training session and started off by going into detail on what his position at the club involves.
“My role is to physically prepare the players for performance,” said Coleman.
“I have to make them as fit as the manager wants them, which involves fitness testing, taking warm-ups and doing individual gym work as well.”
On their first day back, the players were put through a number of tests and the strength and conditioning coach emphasised just how crucial those tests are, by stating: “They’re really important.
“We do body fat measurements just to check how much excess baggage you’re carrying around, so we know whether we need to do any extra work.
“It means we can keep the players in a nice, healthy margin.”
Friday was the final day of a tough week of training, which included both fitness work and technical sessions.
Coleman spoke positively about the fitness levels of the team and claimed that they are firing on all cylinders.
“They’ve come back in really good shape, so we’ve just been sharpening the tools,” Coleman said.
“We don’t have to start from scratch like we did years ago when they came back overweight.
“They’ve come back firing, so we can work on the footballing side.”
Chesterfield get their busy pre-season campaign underway against Staveley Miners Welfare on the 13th of July, which is the first of seven friendlies that have been arranged.
Coleman stressed the importance of recovery during a packed schedule of friendly matches, by explaining: “It’s really vital that we get good recovery strategies.
“When the lads are away from the club, we encourage them to eat well, drink well, the type of things that the modern footballer does.
“We also monitor our training load. Part of my job is that they’re doing enough to prepare them, but also that they’re not tired when it comes to the games.”
