Chesterfield fell to a 1-0 defeat against Harrogate Town at the Proact Stadium on Saturday. An early first-half own goal was enough for the visitors to take all three points.
John Sheridan made one alteration to his side that had been unchanged in the two previous matches. Laurence Maguire returned from injury to replace Will Evans, and Charlie Carter also made his return on the bench.
The visitors had the first chance early on, Jack Emmet found Lloyd Kerry who fired goalwards but Shwan Jalal was equal to it and pushed the ball away for a corner.
From that corner, Harrogate took the lead eight minutes in. The Spireites failed to clear their lines and a cross came off Scott Boden and past Jalal at his near post.
Harrogate came close again when Mark Beck did well to lay the ball off to George Thompson whose shot was bravely blocked by Maguire.
The final piece of action in the first half came when a Curtis Weston corner was headed out to Lee Shaw on the edge of the box who fired a fierce volley that flew just over the crossbar.
Sheridan made two changes in the first ten minutes of the second half, as he looked for a way back in the game. Tom Denton and Carter came on for Marc Antoine Fortune and Weston respectively.
The away side nearly doubled their lead shortly after. Emmett carried the ball through the midfield and into space eventually releasing a strike which was high and wide.
Carter was straight into the action when Ellis Chapman’s cross found the substitute in the box who jumped highest but headed narrowly wide.
Chesterfield nearly found an equaliser when the Spireites’ final substitute, Jerome Binnom-Williams, clipped a brilliant through ball to Scott Boden. Boden touched the ball around the Harrogate goalkeeper but couldn’t turn it in.
The Spireites kept pushing for a goal back and Carter nearly provided it when a Chapman corner was cleared to Carter’s feet. His fierce half-volley had Belshaw beat but flew agonisingly over the bar.
There was to be another chance in added time when Binnom-Williams found Denton in the penalty area. Denton’s header looked to be finding the bottom corner, but the post prevented celebrations and kept Denton’s effort out.
Chesterfield couldn’t find an equaliser and fell to their first defeat in the league since Sheridan arrived back in charge.
