A Mike Fondop header in the second half cancelled out a Joan Luque strike to earn the Spireites a draw against Dagenham & Redbridge at the Proact on Saturday.
John Sheridan made three changes from Monday’s defeat at Stockport County with Luke Coddington making his first competitive start for the club. Robbie Weir and Haydn Hollis also came into the starting eleven.
The Spireites threatened early on as Fondop won a free kick on the left-hand side just a few minutes in. Joe Rowley delivered the free-kick towards the front post which was met by Scott Boden but he could only flick his glancing header over Elliot Justham’s crossbar.
Rowley was stood over another free-kick ten minutes later but this time he decided to have shot at goal. His effort from just under 25 yards clipped the side of the wall but the Dagenham goalkeeper reacted well to make a clever stop.
Halfway through the opening 45 minutes the visitors opened up their opponents for the first time. Luque got on the end of a pass down the left and put in a low ball across goal, however, none of his teammates could get the final touch.
With just under ten minutes of the first half to go, Dagenham opened the scoring. Luque found himself one on one with Coddington after some neat passing from the away side, and he placed his strike into the right corner of the net (36).
The Spireites tried to get back on level terms as Fondop did well to volley from outside the area but the striker pulled the strike wide.
Coddington was called into action just before the break, getting down well to save from Joe Quigley to keep Chesterfield just one goal behind as the teams went in for half time.
The hosts started the second half on the front foot as good hold up play from Fondop allowed him time to play Smith through on the right. The midfielder whipped in a low cross but it ended up narrowly missing Boden at the back post.
Luque looked to get his second of the match as he cut in onto his right foot and aimed an effort at goal from long range. Luckily for the hosts, Coddington was equal to it and pushed the strike around the post.
Chesterfield got their equaliser in the 68th minute. Laurence Maguire floated a perfect cross to Fondop in the box and the forward rose highest to head past Justham.
Dagenham almost were in front again just six minutes from time. Alexander McQueen leapt to head a cross towards goal but was denied by a fantastic save from Coddington to keep the scores even.
Substitute Liam Mandeville thought he grabbed a late winner but his free-kick drifted the wrong side of the left post and the match ended all square.
