Looking towards the Spireites' clash with Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday, John Sheridan declared that he wants his side to not give up possession so easily as Chesterfield go in search of their first win of the season.
“They (the players) need to take care of the ball better for me because a lot of our downfall is giving possession away all over the pitch, we give possession of the ball away too easily," he said.
“A lot of the time it’s when we’re in comfortable possession of it and that’s from the front to the back, so I’ve got to think about the system.
“It’s important that I put a team out where everyone is comfortable in what we’re doing and where we want to go and that’s something we’ve been trying to do for the past couple of days.”
Sheridan went onto state that he wants his players to step up and prove why they should be in the starting XI, by saying: “I’m not someone who messes with my team a lot over my management career.
“It’s not something I like doing but, I just feel like no one’s showing me that they automatically should be in the team.”
Chesterfield are yet to pick up their first victory of the season, however, the boss is determined to turn Chesterfield’s fortunes around.
“I haven’t come here to fail, I’ve come here to succeed, and I’ve been given the job thinking that I am going to do the job properly because of my previous record,” the manager explained.
“At this moment I’m failing, we’re not winning games, we haven’t won in seven and we’re in a position where no one thought at the start of the season Chesterfield would be, so I’ve got to roll my sleeves up and I expect the players to do that as well.”
Injured strikers Tom Denton and Anthony Spyrou will not be involved this weekend, but Sheridan is hopeful they will be available for selection sooner rather than later.
“They’re both coming on well and will hopefully start training next week,” mentioned Sheridan.
“Anthony (Spyrou) is still getting his treatment down at Norwich, they won’t be involved for Saturday or Tuesday but they’re pushing towards next weekend.”
