The Vanarama first fortnight

20 August 2019

League sponsors Vanarama have been busy assessing the season so far - and what’s ahead!

How’s it going?
Chesterfield were most people’s tips for promotion after John Sheridan’s proverbial kick up the backside last season. But after their first five, in the bottom four is not where they would’ve wanted to be. Spireites shouldn’t worry though; Salford and Leyton Orient didn’t set the league alight in the early parts last season.

Inside track...
Assistant manager Glynn Snodin called on the Spireites players to be more ruthless and harder to beat. He also said: “This group is a lovely group of players, but we don’t want to them to be nice on the pitch. We want them to be horrible to play against.”

While Mike Fondop-Talum praised his new boss, saying, “From day one he gave me that boost of confidence which I needed. He wants to help me to do well because by me doing well the club does well.”

Turning point?
Saturday’s draw with Barnet may well be a turning point. Mike Fondop bagged a brace on his Spireites debut as they twice led at The Hive against Barnet. If John Sheridan can address their home form, they’ll be just fine.

Who’s impressed?
Young defender Josef Yarney has looked a shrewd bit of business so far. Despite being just 21 years old, he’s already looking like someone who Chesterfield could depend on. He also notched the equaliser against Maidenhead.

Stat attack...
League position: 22nd
Home goals for: 2
Away goals for: 5
Home goals against: 4
Away goals against: 5
Top scorer: Scott Boden (3)

Next up…
Ian Evatt heads back to the Proact Stadium looking for as much an improvement on the road as the Spireites needs at home. The Bluebirds haven’t won on the road this season and come off the back of a good win against Yeovil Town.

Danger man...
Scott Quigley is on form and was the focal point of most attacks last weekend. If Dior Angus can put away even half of the chances being created for him at the moment, Ian Evatt’s men could be a force to be reckoned with.

Have we already met?
A bore draw last time at the Proact – a result that wouldn’t really help either side at this moment in time.
