Chesterfield battled back to claim a draw at Maidenhead United on Tuesday night after Josef Yarney’s first goal for the club cancelled out a Remy Clerima strike in the second half.
Spireites manager John Sheridan made three changes to the side that played Dover Athletic on the opening day. Haydn Hollis, Sam Wedgbury and Laurence Maguire replaced Curtis Weston, Robbie Weir and Jack McKay in the starting eleven.
The visitors created their first opportunity within two minutes after a David Buchanan cross from the left found Joe Rowley. The midfielder’s header fell at the feet of Liam Mandeville who turned well and shot, however, the forward could only slice his effort over the crossbar.
Just a couple of minutes later Buchanan threatened down the left once again and found Rowley in the box for a second time but his header went over Taye Ashby-Hammond’s crossbar.
With 15 minutes on the clock, the home side looked to stamp their authority on the game. Danny Whitehall picked up the ball inside the area and looked to get a shot off, however, the Maidenhead man was dispossessed well by Yarney.
Liam Mandeville started up front with Scott Boden and the pair were causing the hosts problems as Boden cushioned the ball into the path of Mandeville. The striker curled a well-struck effort at the near post but Ashby-Hammond was equal to it and made a smart stop at his near post.
Mandeville then linked up with Rowley who was charging down the right-hand side. The young midfielder took the ball into the area but was unfortunate to see his effort blocked.
The Spireites continued to pile on the pressure as Maguire hit an effort from distance which was saved well, then Mandeville saw his follow up shot stopped well by the Maidenhead goalkeeper.
Maidenhead began the second half positively as striker Jake Cassidy rose highest to head towards Shwan Jalal’s goal but the Chesterfield stopper made a comfortable save.
Chesterfield stretched the home side’s defence as Rowley clipped a pass into Boden who headed the ball down to Maguire. He connected sweetly with his effort but it deflected narrowly wide.
The home side took the lead just after the hour mark when a low cross from the left found the unmarked Clerima who put his left-footed effort into the far corner (61).
The visitors got their equaliser with 13 minutes left as a corner was met by Will Evans at the far post. The defender headed the ball down to Yarney who smashed his shot low and hard into the back of the net (77).
Maidenhead forced the issue in the last few minutes, however, the Chesterfield defence held strong and the match ended in a draw.
