The youth team had to settle for a 2-2 draw in their opening game at Mansfield Town on Saturday after taking a 2-0 lead.
The Spireites went ahead following goals from Kian Tansley and Chad Gibson, but Mansfield scored twice in the last half an hour of the match to snatch a draw.
The scoring started in the first half when Josh Turner was brought down inside the box and Tansley calmly converted from the spot.
The second goal came against the run of play in the second half, after a good ten-minute spell for Mansfield, when a quick counter-attack caught the defence off-guard and a 20-yard strike from Gibson made it 2-0.
However, Mansfield were soon back into the game when a player collected the ball before taking on a couple of players and striking one from 25 yards out, making it 2-1 with 30 minutes to go.
With the Spireites forced to drop deeper and deeper, another shot from distance went in, making the score 2-2 with 12 minutes to go.
With a couple more chances going Mansfield’s way, the Spireites were under pressure. Towards the end of the game, Mitch Clogg went through one-on-one but unfortunately missed the target.
Coach Neil Cluxton said: “Overall, I was really pleased. Defensively it was a decent performance in terms of keeping our shape, trying to replicate what the first team had been doing during pre-season and we were fairly solid.
“Going forward a lot was on the counter attack, but we did alright and the fitness and attitude to the game was good.
“I would have taken a draw before the start of the game, but just a bit disappointed being 2-0 up with half an hour to go that maybe we didn’t see the game out.”
