An 85th minute winner from Tom Denton secured a 3-2 win against Boreham Wood in the Spireites’ last home game of the season on Monday.

After the Spireites’ defeat to Gateshead last time out, John Sheridan’s intentions were clear, with Curtis Weston, Joe Rowley, Tom Denton, Josef Yarney and Ellis Chapman all returning to the starting lineup.

The first chance fell to Scott Boden, who failed to beat George Legg from close range after being threaded through by Denton.

Soon after, Boreham Wood were lucky not to concede. Manny Parry’s misguided header fell straight to the feet of Boden, but once again Legg made the save comfortably.

Just before the half-hour mark, Will Evans gave away a free kick on the edge of the 18-yard box. Kieran Murtagh stepped up and fired the ball home into the top right-hand corner (28).

Denton had two quick-fire shots which were once again saved by Legg in the Boreham Wood goal. The home side kept plugging away but were unable to make a breakthrough. Curtis Weston’s long-range effort pulled Legg into yet another save to keep his side in the lead.

Two minutes before the break, the Spireites got their well-deserved equaliser. Bradley Barry broke through down the right and managed to pick out Denton who volleyed the ball in from close range for his 8th league goal of the campaign.

Only three minutes after the restart, referee Josh Smith had no option but to point to the spot after Boden’s cross deflected off a Boreham Wood arm. The Chesterfield leading goal scorer Boden stepped up confidently and placed it into the bottom right corner.

The visitors won a free kick close to the halfway line and the floating cross bounced around the penalty area and struck Yarney’s arm. The referee awarded the second penalty of the afternoon and Shaibu had no problem in slotting home his 9th of the season (60).

Chesterfield looked likely to retake the lead, coming close when Denton mistimed his run into the box, meaning Chapman’s cross narrowly missed the tall striker.

With 15 minutes remaining, both sides were still in the game, but unable to get that vital goal. Chesterfield came close yet again when Denton headed over.

After numerous attempts, the Spireites finally got their winner. Tom Denton headed home his second of the afternoon after Chapman’s delightful cross (85).
