A Steve Rigg penalty in the first half was the difference as the Spireites suffered a 1-0 away loss to Gateshead on Friday.
John Sheridan made six changes to the side that ran out 4-1 winners against Maidstone last weekend with Shwan Jalal, Charlie Carter, Robbie Weir, Jonathan Smith, Kyel Reid, and Marc-Antoine Fortune all coming into the starting eleven.
The home side were first to have a shot in anger just inside the five-minute mark. Jon Mellish received the ball around 25 yards from goal and let fly with a left-footed strike, however, it sailed way over Jalal’s crossbar.
Chesterfield looked to create as Reid curled a free kick to the back post from the right-hand side. Will Evans threw himself at the cross but the ball whistled narrowly past the defender’s head.
Gateshead were given a golden opportunity to take the lead when the referee awarded them a penalty for a push on Rigg. The striker stepped up to take it and smashed it down the middle to put the hosts in front (27).
The visitors searched for an equaliser when a run down the right from Scott Boden was spotted by Evans. The Spireites centre back found Boden, the striker cut the ball back to Fortune but Aynsley Pears was equal to his shot to keep his side’s goal advantage.
The hosts were unfortunate not to double their tally with five minutes of the first half remaining. Jalal made a smart save from a powerful low drive from Rigg and Connor Thomson could only put the rebound against the foot of the left post.
The away side started the second half on the front foot as a Reid corner found Laurence Maguire at the back post. The defender directed his header towards goal but Pears got down quickly to make a comfortable save.
Carter was presented with a chance around ten minutes after the break when a Bradley Barry cross picked him out in space inside the area. The Chesterfield attacker glanced his header towards the far post but Gateshead stopper Pears reacted quickly to keep it out.
Rigg almost got a second when a corner was headed back into the centre of the area, he got on the end of the loose ball but fired over.
With ten minutes to go the Spireites pushed for an equaliser when substitute Ellis Chapman delivered a cross to the back post. Tom Denton rose highest to steer his header on target, however, Pears’ good positioning allowed him to make a comfortable stop.
