The youth team went down a 2-0 defeat at home to Hartlepool United on Saturday.
Academy manager John Pemberton was left to rue a number of missed chances which proved costly.
Giving his verdict on the match, Pemberton said: "We started alright but then we gave two silly goals away with poor errors.
"We should have been right back in it in the first half. We weren't as good in the second half.
"We had six really good chances, so the game could have been 6-2. The goalkeeper made four good saves and that, coupled with poor finishing, kept Hartlepool in front.
"We are trying to blood some of the younger ones and bring them on in preparation for next season."
