After Chesterfield’s 3-1 win away at Braintree on Tuesday night, John Sheridan started off by stating that he was pleased with the victory but claimed that his side made it more difficult than it should have been.

“I’m very pleased with the result,” he said.

“It was a massive game because it was our game in hand. The most important thing was to get three points from the game.

“We were 2-0 up at half-time and we were comfortable. I’ve just had a go at them for the second half performance.

“I’ll be hard with them and I have to be hard with them. The three points was the most important thing but we made it very hard for ourselves with the way we played in the second half.

“They get the goal and they’re back in the game. We should have gone on to win the game 4 or 5 nil.”

Tom Denton came back into the starting line-up after being on the bench for the Wrexham game on Saturday.

The forward linked up well with strike partner Scott Boden for the Spireites’ first goal on the night, and the Chesterfield boss put forward that Denton is difficult to play against when he’s on his game.

“I played Denton tonight because I thought he was going to affect the game,” explained the boss.

“He’s a handful when he’s on his game.”

The Spireites face Eastleigh at the Proact in their next National League fixture. Looking ahead to Saturday’s game, Sheridan pointed out that there are plenty of positives that they can take from the Braintree victory.

“There are big pluses. We’ve got three points from the game,” said Sheridan.

“We are seven points clear of the bottom four now.

“Our aim is to try and get as far away as possible as quickly as we can.”
