Substitute Tom Denton scored the winner late on as the Spireites beat Bedford Town 1-0 to progress in the FA Trophy.
Shwan Jalal took over in goal from the suspended Callum Burton and there were also recalls for Joe Rowley, Robbie Weir and Kyel Reid.
In a quiet opening, Lee Shaw failed to direct his header on target and Curtis Weston put an effort wide.
Bedford’s Jermaine Osei got on the end of a cross from the left and shot wide.
The first effort of note came from Rowley whose firm drive from 25 yards saw keeper Ashlee Jones make a good save, diving to his left.
Jones was called into action again shortly afterwards, saving Reid’s low shot.
Jerome Binnom-Williams cut in from the left and fired in a shot which was deflected wide.
Marc Antoine- Fortune then put a shot over from inside the area.
Just before the break, Callum Donnelly saw his long-range effort clear the bar.
Jonathan Smith shot wide soon after the re-start and then Rowley went close with an effort after connecting with Reid’s low cross.
Reid put a shot on the turn over from 20 yards out as Chesterfield continued their search for an opener.
Sheridan made his first change in the 69th minute with Alfie Beestin taking over from Rowley.
Shaw cut in from the right and fired in a shot which was saved by Jones at his near post.
Weir suffered an injury and was forced to limp off in the 77th minute, with Denton coming on as a substitute.
Shaw tried a shot from just outside the area which was deflected wide.
The breakthrough goal finally came in the 89th minute when Smith’s cross from the right found Denton, who headed the ball down before firing past Jones.
