Sheridan: “We’ve got to bounce back quickly”

Following John Sheridan’s first defeat in the league since being back in charge, the Spireites boss gave his thoughts on the 1-0 defeat against Harrogate Town on Saturday.

“It’s always disappointing to lose a game,” he said

“I don’t feel like we got going. I thought we played better in the second half than we did in the first, but we didn’t get going at all.

“There were possibly too many people not on their game, but I don’t want to be hard on them.

“I’m not happy with the way we played or the result but I’m in a position where I must try and stay as positive as I can.

“The important thing now is the game on Tuesday. We need to play better if we are going to win games and we’ve got to bounce back quickly.”

A first-half Harrogate goal was enough for the visitors to get all three points in a game that sprung to life in the latter stages. Sheridan admitted the team had an off day but still merited something out the game.

He said: “I think we deserved something out the game without playing well.

“We’ve had it ourselves when we’ve scored first, we’ve gone on and rode our luck and ended up winning 1-0 whether we deserved it or not and that’s probably what happened to us today.

“They got the goal, they were well organised and defended well when they had to defend.

“I could talk to the players for an hour about how I want us to play better.

“At this moment in time I’m getting a lot of effort from them, but I’d like them to play with their heads a bit more.

“All round in the first half we should be better on the pitch, we were too sloppy with throw-ins and how we passed the ball. We should be doing things a lot better.”

With Barnet next on Tuesday and Wrexham on Saturday for the Spireites, Sheridan thinks the hectic schedule will be a positive for his side.

“I prefer games on Saturday and Tuesday," the boss explained.

"Training takes care of itself, the games are coming thick and fast, so everyone gets the game time they want.

“I’d like to play games because hopefully we can get a few results and pick points up quickly. The league is very tight and there’s not a lot between the teams whether you’re at the top or bottom.

“We just need a bit of consistency but unfortunately at this level, we are going to get frustrated.”
