After the Spireites’ 4-1 victory over Maidstone United at the Proact on Saturday, John Sheridan began the post-match press conference by stating that their opponents made it a tough game despite the scoreline.
“It was comfortable in the end but full credit to Maidstone I think they gave a good account of themselves,” said the boss.
“They came and gave us a right game. I felt at 1-1 we were very lucky to find ourselves still in the game.
“They had good chances and caused lots of problems.
“We’ve ended up winning the game comfortably but performance wise I think we’ve allowed them too many opportunities.
“I’m very pleased to see us score goals and to keep winning at home.”
Laurence Maguire scored the pick of the goals on Saturday as he fired his long-range strike into the right corner of the net in the second minute of stoppage time.
The Chesterfield manager was full of praise for Maguire after the game but believes he is still adapting to his new role in midfield.
“It was a good strike,” explained Sheridan.
“He’s in a new position. It’s a position I believe he can play. He’s got to be busier and have quicker feet but he’s got to get used to that.
“He’s got a good passing range. He’s got a great strike on him because he’s done it a few times in training.”
Tom Denton assisted Scott Boden for his eighth goal in seven games and Sheridan spoke positively about a partnership that has grown since he took charge, by saying: “Both of them have done well.
“They are both a handful. Scott’s a poacher and Dents is a big unit up there.
“If you play to his (Denton) strengths you can cause problems which he has done.
“He’s got back in the team and once he’s got a settled place back in the side he’s done really well.
“When the ball goes into the box he’s a real handful.”
