The youth team went down to a 2-0 defeat at Mansfield Town on Saturday.
The hosts took the lead after around half-an-hour following a long ball and they scored a second out of the blue, following a hopeful clearance.
Coach Darren Molloy said: "It was a frustrating game, I think, for everybody. We hit the bar a couple of times and the goals were out of nowhere, really.
"We played some good stuff in parts and there were some moments when we definitely could have taken advantage of opportunities we created in and around the box.
"They caught us on the counter-attack, which was disappointing given the sort of possession we were having.
"It was a big test because we had only two second-year scholars players so we had quite a young team. The two Under-16s did quite well, up against a big, physical team."
