Chesterfield fell to a 3-0 defeat at home to Gateshead on Saturday, in a game which saw Zavon Hines sent-off after coming on as a substitute.

A Scott Boden double and a stunning strike by Steven Rigg handed the Tynesiders all three points.

Martin Allen handed Tom Denton his home debut in a starting line-up that featured new signing Jonathan Smith whilst fellow midweek arrival Joshua Kayode was on the bench.

Chesterfield started well, clearly focused on using Denton’s physical power up front. But Gateshead opened the scoring in the 19th minute through former Spireite Boden, who finished from close range.

Denton’s aerial ability continued to trouble Gateshead and after some good work from the 29-year-old, Curtis Weston found space on the edge of the box and fired a shot just wide of the post.

The visitors doubled their lead just before half-time with a wonderful piece of individual play by Rigg. The forward skipped past two Chesterfield defenders and hammered the ball into the top corner, leaving Shwan Jalal with no chance.

The last action of the half saw Denton nearly pull a goal back for the Spireites with a headed effort which was saved by Aynsley Pears. Chesterfield went in at the break two goals down.

Allen introduced both Robbie Weir and Kayode at the interval in place of Talbot and Kyel Reid.

With both sides struggling to create chances, Hines was introduced as the final substitution in the 56th minute. Hines had only been on the pitch for eight minutes before he received a red card from referee Simon Mather for a strong challenge inside the Gateshead half.

It got worse for ten-man Chesterfield shortly after when Robbie Tinkler skipped into the box and pulled it back for Boden who grabbed his second of the game with a comfortable finish past Jalal with 22 minutes left on the clock.

Rigg nearly doubled his tally for the day when he was released on goal, but Jalal stood tall to thwart him.

Gateshead dominated the latter stages as Chesterfield struggled to create major chances.

Chesterfield are next in action on Tuesday night when they face Maidenhead United at the Proact.
