New signing Jonathan Smith stated that he wanted to “get involved” as soon as he received the call from Martin Allen, offering him the opportunity to join the Spireites.
Smith said: “I’m delighted to be here. Martin has given me the opportunity to come in and help the team, so I snapped his hand off when I got the call.
“As soon as I got the call I wanted to get down here and get involved. I’ve played against the club many times. It’s a big club, especially for this league.”
Smith then explained that he will let the fans decide what type of player he is, but clearly stated that he wants to be part of a winning team
He said: “I’ve seen a few of these interviews before and I know players like to say what they can and can’t do. I like to leave it to the fans and let them decide what they think of me.
“What I will say is I’ve come here to win games. That’s a big part for me, that I’m in a winning team.”
Smith has experience at National League level, winning promotion with Luton Town in the 2013/14 season. The midfielder said that he will use this experience to benefit his new team.
He commented: “I do know the level. I’ve played in a lot of games at this level and the level above, so I like to think I’ve got experience and know-how at this level. It’s a tough league, everyone knows that.”
When asked how Allen tried to persuade him to join the club, Smith was quick to say that it didn’t take much encouragement from the Spireites manager.
The midfielder said: “He didn’t really need to. I’m a big football fan in general so I know Chesterfield is a big club and Martin Allen is a well-known manager.
“For me to come and play for him at this club is a great opportunity for me.”
Although he has had two spells at York City, Smith has spent most of his career at southern clubs, but the new signing is adamant that he is focused on the task at hand.
He said: “I’ve not just come here for the ride. I’ve not come to meet friends and have a laugh. I’ve come here to win games and do a job.”
