Chesterfield were held to a goalless draw at the Proact by Dover Athletic on Saturday. The Spireites went close to getting a late winner, when both Bradley Barry and Curtis Weston both hit the woodwork in the last minute, but it wasn’t to be.

Manager Martin Allen put out a much-changed side from Tuesday night’s game, with Shwan Jalal, Joe Rowley, Bradley Barry, and Gozie Ugwu all coming into the starting line-up. Lee Shaw was handed his full home debut.

It was the away side who had the first big chance of the game, as a dangerous corner from Dover was whipped in. The ball in caught the Spireites defenders by surprise, but Tim Schmoll could only head over from around six yards out.

Chesterfield were presented with a good chance just a few minutes later, when Ugwu used his strength to brush aside a couple of Dover defenders in the box. He then laid the ball off to Shaw, but the forward was at full stretch and lifted his effort over the bar.

The Spireites had another chance to take the lead, when Shaw had a chance to shoot at goal inside the box. His strike was blocked well, the ball fell to Weston but his follow up shot was saved by Dover goalkeeper Mitch Walker.

Chesterfield started the second half strongly, as Rowley whipped in a corner kick and found the head of Binnom-Williams at the front post. However, he could only glance his effort over the bar.

The home side went close again soon after, as substitute Zavon Hines dribbled his way into the box from the right side. He cut the ball back and found Rowley, but his first-time effort rose over the bar.

The Spireites kept pushing and produced another chance, as Barry put a cross in from the right which found Shaw inside the area. Shaw then laid the ball off to Rowley, and his strike had to be smartly saved by Walker.

The game was reduced to half chances for the rest of the second half, and it took until ten minutes to go for Chesterfield to manufacture another meaningful chance. Hines was played in by Ugwu inside the penalty area, but his shot was saved by the keeper.

Chesterfield went so close to scoring a last-minute winner, but Barry could only hit the post with his effort from inside the area, and Weston saw his follow up strike come off the crossbar.
