It was a disappointing night for the Spireites at Boreham Wood as Jamal Fyfield's seventh minute gave the home side a 1-0 win. Although Chesterfield push hard in the second half, they frustratingly couldn’t force the equaliser.
Lee Shaw made his full debut for the Spireites while Drew Talbot was making his 300th appearance for the club.
The hosts scored when Fyfield rose highest and headed his effort past Spireites keeper Callum Burton.
After a shaky first 20 minutes or so, the Spireites then grew into the game. Shaw produced a good chance, beating three defenders on a mazy run from the halfway line before being denied by a good save from keeper Ryan Huddart.
Boreham Wood went close to extending their lead, courtesy of forward Angelo Balanta. He received the ball inside the box, he turned well and struck a well-hit strike. However, he leaned too far back and his effort went over Burton’s crossbar.
In the last ten minutes of the half, the Spireites started playing their best football, with good interplay from Zavon Hines, Marc-Antoine Fortune, and Shaw. Although both sides were restricted to half chances at best for the rest of the first 45 minutes.
Chesterfield begun the second half brightly, as Talbot put in a dangerous cross which found defender Haydn Hollis, but he could only glance his header wide.
Hines used his quick feet to drift easily past a couple of defenders on the left-hand side. Unfortunately for the Spireites, as he approached the home side’s goal, he lost control of the ball and it was cleared.
Soon after, Hines was causing the Boreham Wood defence problems again and won a foul in a good position on the left for Chesterfield. He curled the free kick, with it looking destined for the top right corner, but it smashed off the post. The ball then fell to Curtis Weston just inside the areaa and he struck his effort well, but it was blocked.
It was then Shaw’s chance to go close for the Spireites. Debutant Levi Amantchi, on as a substitute, flicked on a header which put Shaw through on goal and his left-footed effort beat keeper Huddart, but also just beat the right-hand post and crept just wide.
Unfortunately, the Spireites couldn’t turn their chances into an equaliser and they now look ahead to their next game, at home against Dover Athletic on Saturday.
