Another late goal was the difference, as Chesterfield were beaten 1-0 by Leyton Orient at the Proact on Saturday. James Dayton’s well-taken 78th-minute strike was enough to give the away side the victory.
The Spireites started brightly, and were the better of the two teams in the opening exchanges. The most significant chance came, when Joe Rowley put in a threatening cross in from the right-hand side. His ball in found striker Zavon Hines in the box, but his header was saved well by goalkeeper Dean Brill.
Chesterfield keeper Callum Burton had to make a good save of his own a few minutes later. A good cross in was headed on by Josh Coulson, but luckily for the Spireites, Burton was there to tip it over the bar.
Chesterfield then used their spell of dominance midway through the first half to create some good chances. Hines danced past his marker on the left-hand side and then played a good pass into Binnom-Williams, but his effort from inside the box was deflected over.
Binnom-Williams continued to cause the Leyton Orient defence problems in the first half. He and Gozie Ugwu were involved in some good interplay on the left. Ugwu acrobatically put Binnom-Williams through on goal, but he couldn’t stretch enough to make proper contact on the ball.
Binnom-Williams then turned creator, as he was put in down the left by a lofted pass from Drew Talbot. Binnom-Williams then put in a dangerous low cross, with Hines only inches away from making contact with the ball as he slid in.
After a tight first ten minutes of the second half, the Spireites won a free-kick just outside the Leyton Orient penalty area. Binnom-Williams connected well with his left-footed strike, it beat the wall and the keeper, but he was denied by the left post.
Leyton Orient were presented with a great chance, as a cross found striker Macauley Bonne in space only a few yards out, but he could only head his effort wide of Burton’s goal.
The away side then took the lead, as a loose ball fell to Dayton inside the box and he smashed his effort into the left-hand corner (78).
The Spireites were unable to get a late equaliser and look to bounce back at Boreham Wood on Tuesday night.
