Martin: "We didn’t play anywhere near the levels that we have been playing at"

Speaking to Spireites Digital after Chesterfield's 1-1 draw away at Sutton United, Martin Allen stated that he was disappointed with the team’s performance.

Martin said: “I thought we were awful. I thought it was an absolute robbery. I think we had one shot.

“We didn’t play anywhere near the levels that we have been playing at. They were far better than us all over the pitch.

“We changed it tactically at half-time, and that improved us a little bit. Halfway through the second half, we made another change, and that improved us. It had to improve us.”

Even though he wasn’t happy with the performance, the manager was of course delighted that they managed to grab a late equaliser.

“The preparation for this game wasn’t right, but that’s not an excuse for the performance," he said.

“What I will say, to play diabolical and awful, to come back, get a point and rob it at the end is a good feeling.”

Martin then went on to say that his players know how they can improve before their next fixture at Harrogate on Saturday.

The boss said: “They know. They don’t need telling, they don’t need shouting at and throwing tea cups around.

“These players have been playing really well for us. Full of energy, full of commitment, full of passion.

“We’ve had a nice blend of direct football. We’ve had a nice blend of good passing football.

“We didn’t compete tonight. We didn’t play forward well, we didn’t play short well, we didn’t compete very well.

“We were second best the whole game. Thankfully the substitutions, but don’t call me a genius because any of those substitutions would have made us better.

“The one shot we had, went into the bottom corner.”

Martin praised Sutton for their performance, saying: “I think you’ve got to give the opposition credit as well. They are a team of men, they are athletes, they are powerful, strong, they are well organised.

“They are hard to play against and that’s typical of this division. Coming to places like this, it’s difficult.

“It’s a bit of a learning curve for some of our players. Today I thought they outpowered us.”
