The Spireites drew 1-1 away at Sutton on Tuesday night, thanks to a Jonathan Smith equaliser in the 89th minute, after the home side took the lead from a Jonah Ayunga goal in the first half.
Martin Allen made two changes to the side that drew at home to Wrexham on Saturday. Alex Kiwomya coming in for Will Evans, and Zavon Hines dropped to the bench with Lee Shaw taking his place in the starting XI.
The Spireites were presented with an opportunity when Shaw managed to win a free-kick just outside the Sutton penalty area. Jerome Binnom-Williams stepped up to take it, but his curled effort was caught by Jamie Butler in the Sutton goal.
Sutton went close to taking the lead with just over ten minutes of the first half remaining. A corner from the left found the head of Tom Bolarinwa, but he glanced his header just wide of the far post.
The home side took the lead in the 37th minute, with Ayunga finding himself in the box with time to shoot. The striker picked his spot and rolled the ball past Callum Burton.
The bright Ayunga tried to double the scoring, cutting inside from the right and let fly with a shot. The forward struck his effort well, but the strike was straight at Burton.
Sutton were first to create a chance in the second half, as Kieron Cadogan had time to curl an effort from outside the box. His strike looked goal-bound, but luckily for the Spireites, it came back off the crossbar.
Chances were hard to come by for the majority of the second 45 minutes, but Smith managed to whip in a dangerous cross from the right with just over ten minutes to go. The right back’s cross flashed across the face of Butler’s goal, but it narrowly went over Laurence Maguire’s head, as he was charging in at the back post.
The Spireites managed to grab an equaliser with just one minute of the 90 left to play. Smith raced onto a loose ball and let fly from 20 yards out. He struck his first time shot sweetly, and it flew into the bottom right corner (89).
