A 90th-minute penalty from Zavon Hines rescued a point for Chesterfield against Bromley on Tuesday night, after George Porter gave the visitors the lead in the first half.
Martin Allen made just one change to the side that drew away at Eastleigh, with Hines replacing Lee Shaw in the starting eleven. The Spireites were forced to make a change just before kick-off with Jerome Binnom-Williams being replaced by Sam Muggleton, and Kyel Reid took Muggleton’s place on the bench.
It was the visitors who created the first clear chance of the first half, as Porter managed to get on the end of a dangerous from the left-hand side. Fortunately for Chesterfield, the midfielder could only head wide of the left post from close range.
Hines threatened down the right and manufactured a chance as he made his way into the Bromley penalty area. The forward dribbled past his marker, but his well-hit strike went into the side netting.
It was Jonathan Smith who threatened the Bromley goal next for the Spireites. The midfielder let fly with a speculative effort from around 25 yards out, but it dipped just over David Gregory’s crossbar.
The away side took the lead in the 36th minute when a free kick was headed back across into the centre of the Chesterfield penalty area. Porter rose highest and powered his header past Callum Burton.
The Spireites searched for an equaliser as Tom Denton knocked the ball down for Smith to run onto on the edge of Bromley’s box. Smith struck his first-time effort well, but it was blocked by the Bromley defence.
Bromley had the chance to double their lead just before the break, as Jake Goodman was free to head at goal from six yards out. He managed to get his effort on target, but it was straight into the grateful arms of Burton in the Chesterfield goal.
The home side were first to have a shot at goal in the opening moments of the second half, as Hines dribbled into the box from the left. The striker hit his right-footed effort on target and was unlucky to see it deflected just over the crossbar.
It took until the 70th minute for either side to create another opportunity, as Hines made his way across the box and laid the ball off to Smith. The midfielder hit his effort sweetly, but it was straight at Bromley keeper Gregory.
Around ten minutes later the Spireites created another chance as substitute Levi Amantchi beat his man and passed to Reid. The winger struck his effort from outside the area well, and the Bromley goalkeeper had to make a good save to deny Reid.
Chesterfield were given the opportunity to equalise in the 90th minute when a handball in the area gave Hines the chance to score from the penalty spot. The Spireites forward rolled the ball home to level the game in the last minute.
Hines had the chance to grab a late winner in the second minute of added time, when a dangerous cross from the left found the forward around 6 yards from goal. He managed to get his head to it, but could only put it over.
