Chesterfield will once again be represented internationally later this week, when our U13s head to Holland to take part in the TOGB Invitational tournament.
The team fly out on Thursday, and it’s fair to say that there’s a lot going on over the course of the trip.
Lead Coach, Development Phase Darren Molloy said: “We’re going to the Amsterdam Arena for a stadium tour, before later in the day the players will have a coaching session with one of the Dutch FA coaches and then a friendly in the evening against a local team.
“We then head to play the tournament in Rotterdam the next day, it’s a new tournament that we’ve been invited to, it’s a good time of year to go and it’s something new and challenging for the lads.”
It certainly promises to be a challenge for the young Spireites, but they’ll go into the event full of confidence after a very strong season on the domestic front.
“We’ve got a group of Feyenoord, Royal Antwerp and Lombardia - who are AC Milan’s feeder club - so it’ll be of a high standard,” Molloy said.
“There are two groups, you play your group matches and then play your opposite number in the other group on the following day, so the two top teams play in the final, while the second, third and fourth placed teams will all face each other.
“Our U14s went over a couple of months ago and lost in the final to PSV Eindhoven on penalties. So, we tend to do well when we go over there, we’ve got good players, so why not?”
The tournament wraps up the season for the academy staff and players, who could potentially have even more to look forward too once they return from their summer break.
Molloy added: “Across all of our age groups it’s been a very successful campaign, and we’re in the process of being invited to the Premier League tournaments next season, and if we play in them it’ll be above our category and good progression for us.
“It’ll be good recognition for the work that we’re doing and also for the players that we’ve got.”
