Chesterfield's U16s were defeated by their Derby County counterparts 2-0, in the final of the J&S Floodlit Cup at the Proact this evening.

A goal in either half from Jaden Charles and Archie Brown was enough to seal the win for the Rams, despite a brave effort from Darren Molloy's side.

It was the visitors who fashioned the first chance of the game, when captain Eiran Cashin headed wide of goal from a Charles corner. Spirietes goalkeeper Dylan Wharton was called into action in the 10th minute, getting down low to save Liam Thompson's shot, after the Rams launched a counter attack from a Chesterfield corner.

At the other end, Chad Gibson, showed good skill on the left flank, before pulling the ball back to Will Russ inside the area, unfortunately, the Welsh U16 international couldn't direct his volley towards goal.

Tyree Wilson's mazy run was ended, after he was fouled outside the penalty area by Conor Emery. From the resulting free kick, Charles' effort cleared the wall, but was easily saved by Wharton. Central defender Callum Walmlsey then headed wide from a Gibson corner in the 27th minute for the hosts.

Gibson then tested Rams 'keeper Bradley Foster-Theniger in the 30th minute, jinking past a defender before letting fly from distance, however, Foster-Theniger was down quickly to his right to save.

Chances remained at a premium for the remainder of the half, until Charles put the visitors in front on the stroke of half time. He held off the challenge of Tobhias Rhule inside the area, before placing a left-footed effort past Wharton.

The Spireites started the better of the two teams after the interval, though they were unable to create any clear cut chances. Gibson however, did manage to hit the top of the cross bar with a left-footed cross.

Derby then doubled their advantage, through a stunning strike by Brown, who held off a defender before firing a fierce strike into the top right-hand corner of the net, leaving Wharton with no chance.

The Spireites made a double susbtitution in an attempt to get back into the game, however, it was the visitors who came close to scroing the third goal of the game, when Jack Stretton ran off his marker into the area before hitting the side netting.

Gibson then went close twice in a matter of minutes to pulling a goal back in the closing stages, firstly seeing an effort deflected over after a JoshTurner free kick was cleared only as far as him. And then when after picking up a cross from the right flank, he showed good feet to get past Kornell MacDonald before firing over from close range.

It simply wasn't to be for the Spireites, with the Rams holding on to take home the silverware.
