First-half goals from Sid Nelson and Zavon Hines, along with a late Kristian Dennis penalty gave Chesterfield a 3-1 victory over Midlands rivals Notts County at the Proact on Sunday afternoon.
Nelson converted an Andy Kellett corner for his first goal in a blue shirt. Hines then doubled the advantage, with his first goal in Spireites colours with a well-taken finish in the 39th minute.
Former Town left back Dan Jones then pulled a goal back for the Magpies in the 84th minute, when his free-kick from the right flank found its way into the far corner of the net.
Dennis then sealed the game for Town in stoppage time, scoring from the spot for his 18th goal of the season after Kellett was fouled in the area.
Louis Reed returned to the side after serving a two-match ban and the game marked Drew Talbot’s 250th appearance for the club.
Talbot must have thought his milestone match would feature a goal after his flick from Kellett's corner was goal-bound, however it was bundled over the line from Nelson (16).
Kellett's perfectly weighted ball found the head of Dennis, but his shot was dealt with comfortably by keeper Adam Collin.
Chesterfield were out-classing County in all aspects and they scored a well-deserved second goal in the 39th minute. With Dennis and Hines pressing well up pitch, the ball fell kindly to Hines who fired the ball past Collin with conviction.
The winger nearly grabbed Chesterfield's third just minutes later when some good footwork on the left helped him get past Matt Tootle, but his shot flew just over the bar from a tight angle.
County’s had a good chance when Jorge Grant crossed the ball into Jon Stead whose header flashed well wide.
Hines hit the side-netting with a shot on the turn soon after the re-start.
The Spireites were in complete control with Kellett and Alex Whitmore both going close, the score-line should have matched the hosts dominance.
The visitors managed to pull a goal back with six minutes to go when Dan Jones’ free-kick on the right-hand side managed to evade everyone, with the ball going inside the far post.
There were chances late on for Dennis, Jacob Brown and substitute Jak McCourt before the Spireites sealed victory with a third goal.
Kellett raced through on goal but was taken down by Tootle. Dennis stepped up to send Collin the wrong way.
