Martin Allen was pleased to be able to use last night's final pre-season friendly, at Matlock Town, to provide the youngsters with further valuable experience.
Speaking after the 4-2 defeat, Allen said: “I actually enjoyed it, to be honest. I thought it was a lovely occasion and it was another opportunity for our young players to play against men.
“I thought in the second half we gave a much better account of ourselves and we played some good football.
“I can see why our supporters enjoy coming here and next season we will definitely make this a good Saturday game and bring our first team. I thought they really played well.”
Looking towards the season opener against Ebbsfleet on Saturday, Allen commented on how much he is looking forward to the game.
He said: “I can’t wait, but over the years I’ve evolved and I know how to control myself. I’ve heard we’re going to have a couple of hundred fans down there.
“I will help and support our players and together we know we’ve got a job to do.
“We’ve had five/six/seven weeks to embrace our supporters in all different areas of the football club, which has been an absolute pleasure, but now I am well aware that this is the sharp end, it is competition time and this is where it really happens.”
