Lifelong Spireite Peter Stockton, who is treminally ill, was given a 70th birthday present to remember on Friday when he was treated to a VIP training ground visit before enjoying lunch with the players and manager at the Proact.
After lunch, Martin Allen gathered the players round the table and they all sang 'Happy Birthday' to the special guest!
Peter, who presented the matchball to Drew Talbot before kick-off in the final home game of last season against Newport, only found out about the surprise visit the night before.
Reflecting on the day, Peter said: “It was very exhilarating. The weather started a little wet but it got better and better, as did the training. Martin really motivates the players, he knows exactly what they’re doing and they put 100% effort into it.
“I’m very impressed and I’m very excited. I just hope that I can see them for the rest of the season.
“The players greeted me very well on the training ground. They all shook hands and Martin introduced me to every single player.
“I’ve been up and had lunch with them all and they’ve all been very kind. They presented me with a lovely birthday card for my 70th and I have really enjoyed it. I could live it every day.”
Peter commented on his favourite memories from watching the Spireites, saying: “They're all favourite memories; every time you see your football team it’s a memory.
“When I presented that ball on the last match of the season, that was a very emotional day for me and the applause I got from all those fans was unbelievable.”
Peter also talked about how much of an impact the club has had on his life. He said: “I’ve supported them for 65 years and for the rest of it, whatever I have got now, I will always be a Spireite 'til I die.”
