Louis Reed scored a free-kick crackerjack and teed up sub Kristian Dennis to grab a dramatic injury time winner to give Chesterfield a priceless second away win of the season, in a 2-1 win over Yeovil Town.
Between those two goals, Yeovil sub Lewis Wing had scored a superb equaliser that led to pressure that threatened to give the home side a winner but Dennis saw things differently, leaving Yeovil’s players fuming feeling that Reed had fouled when he won the ball and that argument led to Glovers star man Otis Khan being sent off for shoving the referee as Spireites players and 252 travelling fans went berserk.
Jack Lester was forced to make one change following the terrific victory over table-toppers Luton Town, Drew Talbot missing out with a hamstring injury. He was replaced by new signing Alex Whitmore, recruited in the week from Burnley and he slotted in at left back.
Yeovil, who started the game one place and four points ahead of the visitors, named only five subs six days before they host Manchester United in the FA Cup, with Khan set to miss out.
The game started slowly, former Spireite Nathan Smith, playing as a central defender, swung but hit air on the edge of the six after dangerman Khan’s free-kick was flicked on by Francois Zoko who, on 18 minutes, had the game’s first on-target effort, Aaron Ramsdale though confidently gathered it in to his chest.
Jordan Green’s shot was blocked by Sid Nelson before a Joe Rowley free-kick just eluded Jak McCourt. Ramsdale saved again, diving left but holding tight from Khan’s run and shot. Spireites first corner, on 28, was caught by keeper Artur Krysiak who soon had to be alert to keep a Chris O’Grady left footer out after Ramsdale’s goal kick was inadvertently headed backwards by a Glovers defender.
The final first half action saw Jake Gray burst through but Laurence Maguire blocked to ensure the break came with no goals on the scoreboard.
Tom James’ deep cross found Sam Surridge but he headed wide as the second half started with more intensity. Josh Kay burst through to the box-edge but his shot was blocked and in the opposite box Maguire and Nelson did enough to keep Zoko out.
Khan’s free kick earned a corner that saw Gray’s shot bobble goalwards before being hacked clear but Khan immediately delivered a telling cross in that Rowley put behind for another corner that was poor but Chesterfield were straight away under pressure as Ryan Dickson burst through but his shot was blocked.
Andy Kellett came on for Zavon Hines and his first action was to take a short corner that saw Nelson bundled over but referee Johnson felt it wasn’t an unfair challenge on him. Kay hit high as the pace of the play continued with Kellett being a major contributor to Spireites new found intensity.
Smith fouled O’Grady just outside the box, Reed stepped up to deliver and beat the seven man Yeovil wall and Krysiak’s full-length ride sided dive to rest in the net to give Spireites a precious lead, the 26th time in 11 games Krysiak has conceded against Chesterfield, more concessions than against any other club.
Gray zipped a low shot inches wide as Yeovil sought to get back into the game whilst McCourt had a great chance to extend the lead, Kellett’s cross found his fellow midfielder but the shot was miscued and didn’t quite fall for O’Grady at the far post.
With ten minutes remaining sub Wing received 25 yards out and he unleashed an unstoppable half-volley that gave Ramsdale no chance.
Yeovil had a great chance a minute later when Khan picked up a loose ball, darted into the box to force a great block from Ramsdale and Khan rapidly regained possession and saw his next shot blocked.
Ramdsale had to palm away a 30 yard Khan free kick and then save a Bevis Mugabi header as Yeovil sought to grab a winner.
Four minutes of time was added with the game as stretched as at any time and Ramsdale had to full length dive right to fingertip a Khan shot out for a corner which was scrambled away from Zoko as Spireites hung on but Reed won possession just outside the box and fired a long ball through to Dennis to beat Krysiak to the ball well outside the box and slide the ball into the empty net from 35 yards and earn a vital three points for the visitors.
