Luke Rawson opened the scoring for a young Chesterfield side just before the break, but an unfortunate error at the back enabled Handsworth Parramore to level ten minutes before the end, in a 1-1 draw at a snowy St George’s Park, Sheffield Graves.
Having being originally postponed due to Handsworth’s home ground in Worksop being waterlogged, the game was rapidly rescheduled to take place at the FA’s Sheffield base and just before kick-off, snow arrived and at times the game was played out in blizzard conditions.
The wind-chill factor led to arctic-like moments and it was decided to play 40 minutes each way with a rapid half-time turnaround.
Handwsorth began well and Dylan Parkin had to make three smart saves before Ify Ofoegbu forced a save from Parramore’s keeper following a Rawson ball in from the right. Levi Amantchi also drew a decent save before Spireites scored, Ofoegbu’s right sided cross being converted neatly by Rawson.
Parramore, currently second in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division, got in the first shot of the second half, it flew wide, before Jack Brownell hot just over from the box-edge and sub Aaron Sennett-Nielson struck the bar following an excellent Amantchi pass.
Parkin was replaced in goal by Teddy Marris who erred with the ball at his feet, allowing Parramore to level through Alfie Dodsworth, Marris making amends a few minutes later with an excellent diving save to tip away a goal-bound long ranger.
Brownell came closest to grabbing a winner on an evening where the ball’s movement was affected both by surface snow and the wind, but both sides played the game competitively, in great spirit, with hardly a foul to remember.
Chesterfield: Parkin (Marris), Howard (Emery), Hand, Render, Wylde (Sennett-Nielsen), Holmes, Brownell, Wakefield, Ofoegbu (Walker), Amantchi, Rawson (Russ).
