First half goals from Joe Rowley and Jak McCourt (penalty) secured an impressive 2-0 victory for Chesterfield over table-topping Luton Town at the Proact.
The result takes the Spireites out of the relegation zone.
Chris O’Grady had the first shot of the game in the ninth minute which was blocked by a Luton defender.
Moments later, Drew Talbot’s cross into the penalty area was directed towards goal by Zavon Hines, but Johnny Mullins was across to block.
Luton’s first chance of the game came in the 15th minute when James Collins' reverse ball put Andrew Shinnie in on goal and Aaron Ramsdale got down smartly at his near post to deny the midfielder.
Chesterfield’s opener came in the 18th minute. After Hines’ pass released Robbie Weir on the right-hand side, Rowley was on-hand to smash home the skipper’s drilled low cross.
The Spireites doubled their tally for the afternoon seven minutes later when Josh Kay’s pass split the Luton defence when Hines advanced into the area, James Justin bundled him over and the referee pointed to the spot. McCourt took the penalty and calmly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to score his sixth goal of the season.
Luton manager Nathan Jones made a change on the 28th minute when Olly Lee was replaced by Harry Cornick.
The Hatters' best chance of the game fell to Shinnie. Elliott Lee did well to pull the ball back to the midfielder in front of goal, but his effort was scuffed and went sailing over the bar.
The second-half started off slowly with neither side having any clear goalscoring opportunities.
The first half-chance came when Louis Reed’s strike from distance forced Marek Stech to parry the ball.
Luton thought they were level on the 65th minute. Collins put the ball in the back of the net after Lee got in down the left, but he was adjudged to be in an off-side position.
Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu and Jordan Cook came on for Luton in the 81st minute.
Cook tried a long-range shot moments later, which Ramsdale pushed behind for a corner.
A resolute Spireites defence held off a late Luton onslaught, giving them their sixth league win of the season.
