The Spireites were beaten 3-1 away at National League leaders Leyton Orient on Saturday. An Alex Kiwomya goal levelled the scores, but goals from Marvin Ekpiteta and Macauley Bonne in the second half gave the home side all three points.
Martin Allen made three changes to the side that defeated Basford United in the FA Trophy last weekend. Sam Muggleton came in for the injured Bradley Barry, Curtis Weston replaced Alfie Beestin who dropped to the bench, and Levi Amantchi started in place of the injured Jordan Hallam.
The Spireites were first to create a chance in the first half as Muggleton whipped in a dangerous cross from the right-hand side. Unfortunately for the Spireites, his ball in was narrowly in-front of Tom Denton who was charging in at the back post.
The home side were next to manufacture an opportunity when Joe Widdowson cut in from the left and shot from inside the area. Will Evans managed to partly block the effort from the left-back, and Callum Burton was then able to gather.
Leyton Orient made the most of their early pressure when they opened the scoring in the ninth minute. Josh Koroma got past his marker, made his way into the penalty area, and dispatched a right-footed strike into the left corner of Burton’s goal.
Chesterfield tried to respond quickly when in-form Kiwomya beat his man on the edge of the box. However, the winger could only pull his shot wide of Dean Brill’s right post.
Amantchi was next to threaten the Leyton Orient goal as a pass from Jonathan Smith found him with space in the penalty area. The young striker turned and struck his shot well, but it rose over the crossbar.
The Spireites levelled the scoring with ten minutes of the first half remaining. Lee Shaw crossed from the right and Kiwomya was there to head into the top right corner (35).
The away side were first to have a chance of going into the lead in the second half. Shaw threatened again down the right-hand side and found Denton with a right-footed cross. However, the forward’s header looped into the arms of the Leyton Orient goalkeeper.
Burton was called into action when Bonne was put through on goal. Fortunately for the Spireites, the keeper made a smart save to his left to keep the scores level.
Moments later the Spireites went close as substitute Alfie Beestin put in a corner from the right towards Denton. The forward headed towards goal, but Brill just about managed to keep the ball from going over the line.
In the 62nd minute, the home side went in front again, as Jobi McAnuff dribbled past his man on the left and put in a low cross. His cross was met by Ekpiteta who tapped home from close range.
Jonathan Smith tried to equalise for the Spireites with a long-range strike which he hit well, but the shot was straight at the keeper.
Leyton Orient were given the chance to extend their lead when Joe Rowley brought down Josh Brophy inside the area. The home side’s top scorer Bonne stepped up to take the penalty, and he placed it coolly into the bottom left corner (85).
